Türkiye occupies a position no other destination quite matches for Pakistani students: European-standard universities, degrees recognised across Europe, a Muslim-majority country where halal food and prayer facilities are simply normal, and tuition starting around $3,500 a year — roughly a fifth of what the UK or Australia costs.

First Decision: Public or Private University
Most consultancy websites list only private (foundation) universities. You should understand both options before you choose, because the cost difference is enormous.
Public (State) Universities
$300–1,500 per year for most programmes. Far cheaper and more competitive. Many require the YÖS entrance exam or strong Turkish, and teaching is often in Turkish, though English-taught programmes exist. Examples: Middle East Technical University (METU), Boğaziçi, Istanbul University, Ankara University.
Private (Foundation) Universities
$3,500–14,000 per year. Easier and faster admission, no YÖS required, most programmes taught fully in English, rolling intakes, and scholarship discounts of 25–75% commonly offered. This is the route most Pakistani students take, and the universities listed below.

Türkiye Bursları — The Fully Funded Route
This is a government scholarship, not a university discount, and it is genuinely comprehensive: full tuition, university accommodation, a monthly stipend, health insurance, one return flight, and a year of Turkish language training before your degree begins.

Student Visa and Residence Permit — Two Separate Things
This trips up more Pakistani students than any other part of the process, so it is worth being precise about the difference.
1. Student visa — applied for in Pakistan
Applied for at the Turkish consulate with your acceptance letter. Fee is approximately $60. This is permission to enter Türkiye, and it is short-term.
2. Residence permit (ikamet) — applied for in Türkiye
Applied for online at e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr within 30 days of arriving. Card fee is 964 TL for 2026. Valid one year, renewed annually. This is what actually lets you stay and study.

You will see a specific bank balance quoted around the internet as a fixed rule. In practice the consulate assesses whether your funds credibly cover tuition and living costs for the duration of your course, and the expectation varies with your programme and sponsor. Working While You Study
Be careful here, because this is widely misrepresented. Türkiye is not a work-while-you-study destination in the way Australia or the UK are.
- Undergraduate students may work only after completing the first year, and only with a valid work permit.
- Master’s and doctoral students may work with a work permit, without the first-year wait.
- A work permit is a separate application tied to a specific employer. There is no automatic right to work attached to your student status.
Plan your finances on the assumption that you will not earn anything in your first year. If part-time earnings are essential to making the numbers work, Türkiye is the wrong destination, and we will say so rather than let you find out after you arrive.

Private universities operate rolling admissions, so decisions often arrive within one to three weeks — considerably faster than Europe or Australia. It is the visa and ikamet stages that need lead time, not the admission itself.
Frequently Asked Questions — Türkiye
Can I study in Türkiye without IELTS?
Often yes. Many private Turkish universities accept a Medium of Instruction letter, their own online English test, TOEFL or Duolingo instead of IELTS. This is one of the genuine advantages of Türkiye over Ireland, the UK or Australia, where MOI is rarely accepted. What is accepted varies by university, so confirm before assuming — and note that holding an English test still strengthens a visa file even where the university waives it.
Is a Turkish degree recognised in Pakistan and Europe?
Turkish universities operate within the Bologna Process, so degrees carry ECTS credits and are recognised across Europe. For Pakistan, check HEC equivalence for your specific institution and programme before enrolling — particularly for medicine and dentistry, where PMDC recognition is assessed separately and is not automatic.
What is the YÖS exam and do I need it?
YÖS is the entrance examination used by most Turkish public universities for international applicants, testing mathematics and logical reasoning. Private universities generally do not require it and admit on your academic transcripts instead. If you are targeting a public university for the much lower fees, you will usually need to sit YÖS.
What happens if I miss the 30-day ikamet deadline?
You fall out of legal status, which means fines, complications at renewal, and potential problems with future Turkish or Schengen applications. Book your e-ikamet appointment in your first week. Appointment slots in Istanbul fill up, and the 30 days run from your arrival date, not from when a slot happens to become available.
Can I bring my family with me?
A student residence permit does not carry automatic dependant rights. Family members must qualify for their own permits, and you would need to evidence sufficient income and accommodation. If your plan depends on bringing dependants, Türkiye is generally not the right choice.
Is Türkiye cheaper than Cyprus or Malaysia?
They are close, and the right answer depends on your programme. Türkiye typically beats Cyprus on living costs outside Istanbul and offers stronger university rankings; Malaysia often wins on English-taught business programmes and UK twinned degrees.
