The Graduate Route drops from 2 years to 18 months on 1 January 2027. Applications submitted on or before 31 December 2026 still receive the full two years. From 1 January 2027, bachelor’s and master’s graduates get 18 months. Six months of post-study work rights turn on which side of that date your application falls — and most consultancy websites, including IDP’s, still advertise two years without mentioning the change.

Why Pakistani Students Choose the UK

The UK offers something no other destination does: a one-year master’s degree. Where Australia, Canada and the US take two years, a UK master’s is finished in twelve months. That halves your tuition, halves your living costs, and puts you back in the job market a full year earlier. Once you compare total outlay rather than annual fees, the UK is frequently cheaper than destinations that look more affordable on paper.

Add four of the world’s top ten universities, degrees recognised everywhere, a large Pakistani community, and direct flights from Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad — and the appeal is obvious. What follows are the numbers and rules that actually decide whether you get there.

The Graduate Route — And the 31 December 2026 Deadline

The Graduate Route lets you stay and work in the UK after graduating without a job offer and without employer sponsorship. You can work in any role, at any level, for any employer, and look for a skilled job that leads to longer-term sponsorship.

Application submittedBachelor’s / Master’sPhD
On or before 31 December 20262 years3 years
From 1 January 202718 months3 years

The Graduate Route is a separate application made from inside the UK once you have completed your degree. It carries its own costs: a £937 application fee plus £1,035 per year Immigration Health Surcharge. Budget for it now rather than discovering it in your final term.

What this means practically. If you are targeting a September 2026 start, you will finish a one-year master’s around September 2027 — after the cut-off — so you should plan around 18 months, not two years. The two-year window applies to Graduate Route applications made before the deadline, which in practice means students already partway through their studies. We would rather you planned with the real number.

Proof of Funds and the 28-Day Rule

This is where most Pakistani refusals happen, and it is entirely avoidable.

Where you studyPer monthFor 9 monthsApprox. PKR
London£1,529£13,761Rs. 50.9 lakh
Outside London£1,171£10,539Rs. 39.0 lakh

This is on top of your tuition. If you have already paid a tuition deposit, that amount is deducted from what you must show.

🚫
The 28-day rule is the single most common cause of UK refusals. The funds must sit in your account — or a parent’s account, with a birth certificate and a letter of consent — for 28 consecutive days. The closing balance must not drop below the required amount on any day in that window, and your statement must be dated no more than 31 days before you apply. A single dip on day 19 restarts the entire 28-day clock.
  • Money in a friend’s, uncle’s or sibling’s account is not accepted. Only your own account or a parent’s or legal guardian’s.
  • Prize bonds, property valuations and shares are not accepted as maintenance funds.
  • An education loan from a recognised financial institution is accepted, with the sanction letter.

What It Actually Costs — Every Fee Included

ItemAmount (GBP)Approx. PKR
Tuition — bachelor’s£12,000–25,000/yrRs. 44.4–92.5 lakh
Tuition — master’s (one year)£14,000–30,000Rs. 51.8 lakh–1.11 crore
Tuition — MBA£20,000–60,000Rs. 74.0 lakh–2.22 crore
Student visa application£558Rs. 2.06 lakh
Immigration Health Surcharge£776 per year of your courseRs. 2.87 lakh/yr
IELTS UKVI in PakistanRs. 72,000–75,600
TB test (mandatory for Pakistan)Rs. 12,000–15,000
Maintenance funds — London£13,761Rs. 50.9 lakh
Maintenance funds — outside London£10,539Rs. 39.0 lakh

Converted at £1 = Rs. 370 (July 2026). Fees verified July 2026 — UK Home Office fees were revised in April 2026, so confirm on gov.uk before paying.

💰
The IHS is the cost students forget. At £776 per year, a one-year master’s adds roughly Rs. 2.9 lakh, and a three-year bachelor’s around Rs. 8.6 lakh — payable upfront with your visa application, not in instalments. It buys full NHS access, which is genuinely valuable, but it must be budgeted from the start. Most competitor pages, IDP’s included, do not mention it at all.

The Student Visa — What It Is Now Called

“Tier 4” no longer exists. It was replaced by the Student route in October 2020, yet several Pakistani consultancy websites still use the old name. If a consultant tells you to apply for a Tier 4 visa, they are working from documentation that is over five years out of date.

Studying in the UK Without IELTS

A number of UK universities accept a Medium of Instruction letter for degree-level entry if your previous qualification was taught in English — saving you roughly Rs. 75,000 and several weeks. This applies to degree-level courses only; anything below degree level requires IELTS UKVI by law.

Which universities accept MOI changes from year to year and by programme, so it is worth checking rather than assuming. If you do need a test, our sister company Language World runs IELTS and PTE preparation in Karachi. There is more detail in our UK Graduate Route guide.

Bringing Family — The Rule That Changed

🚫
Taught master’s students can no longer bring dependants. Since January 2024, only students on PhD or research-based postgraduate programmes, or on government-funded scholarships, may bring a spouse or children. If you are applying for a taught one-year master’s — which is what most Pakistani students take — your family cannot accompany you on your visa. This single change has redirected a great many students towards Ireland, Finland or Canada, and any consultant who does not raise it is not doing their job.

Intakes

September / October — main

The overwhelming majority of programmes and nearly all scholarships. Start your application December–February.

January / February

Widely offered, particularly for master’s. Start by July–September.

May — limited

A small number of universities, mostly business and management programmes.

Undergraduate applications generally run through UCAS, with an equal-consideration deadline in late January. If you miss it, UCAS Clearing in August matches students to remaining places — a genuine second chance, though choice is narrower. Master’s applications go directly to universities and are usually assessed on a rolling basis, so early applicants get better offers and better scholarship outcomes.

Working While You Study

  • 20 hours per week during term for degree-level students; full-time during official vacations.
  • The 20 hours is a hard cap across all jobs combined, and breaching it is a visa violation, not a technicality.
  • You cannot be self-employed, work as a professional sportsperson, or take a permanent full-time role.
  • Below-degree-level students are limited to 10 hours per week.

Frequently Asked Questions — UK

How much bank balance do I need for a UK student visa?

+

£13,761 for London or £10,539 outside London — nine months of maintenance at £1,529 or £1,171 per month — plus any outstanding tuition. Roughly Rs. 50.9 lakh or Rs. 39.0 lakh. The money must be held for 28 consecutive days without the balance dipping below the required amount on any single day, in your own account or a parent’s.

How long is the Graduate Route now?

+

Two years for applications submitted on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months from 1 January 2027 for bachelor’s and master’s graduates. PhD graduates keep three years. Many websites still say two years without qualification — if you are starting a master’s in September 2026 you will finish after the cut-off, so plan for 18 months.

What is the Immigration Health Surcharge?

+

A compulsory upfront payment of £776 per year of your course, giving full NHS access. A one-year master’s costs about Rs. 2.9 lakh in IHS; a three-year bachelor’s about Rs. 8.6 lakh. It is paid in full at the visa application stage, not in instalments, and it is the cost Pakistani students most often overlook when budgeting.

Can I bring my wife and children on a UK student visa?

+

Only if you are on a PhD or research-based postgraduate programme, or a government-funded scholarship. Since January 2024, taught master’s students cannot bring dependants. If bringing family is essential, Ireland, Finland and Canada remain options and we can compare them for your situation.

Can I study in the UK without IELTS?

+

Sometimes. A number of UK universities accept a Medium of Instruction letter for degree-level courses if your previous qualification was taught in English, and some run their own English assessment. Below degree level, IELTS UKVI is required by law with no exceptions. Which universities accept MOI varies by year and programme, so check rather than assume.

Why do Pakistani UK visa applications get refused?

+

The most common reasons, in order: the 28-day rule broken by a balance dipping mid-window; funds held in an ineligible account such as a sibling’s or uncle’s; a bank statement dated more than 31 days before applying; a missing or expired TB certificate; and a CAS that does not match the course applied for. Almost all of these are documentation errors rather than judgements about you — which is why they are preventable.

Is a one-year UK master’s taken seriously?

+

Yes. UK master’s degrees are one year by design, not compressed versions of something longer, and they are recognised worldwide including by HEC. The intensity is real — there is no long summer break and dissertations run through it — but the financial logic is strong: one year of tuition and one year of living costs instead of two.

UK or Australia — which is better for Pakistani students?

+

The UK is faster and usually cheaper overall because the master’s is one year, and the university brand names are stronger. Australia offers longer post-study work rights, permits dependants, and has a clearer permanent residency pathway. In short: UK for the degree and the speed, Australia for settlement. Our CEO is an Australian citizen and Griffith graduate, so we can compare both honestly rather than steering you toward one.

🎓
Is the UK right for you? It is an excellent choice if you want a globally respected degree quickly, can evidence roughly Rs. 39–51 lakh in maintenance plus tuition, and value a one-year master’s. It is the wrong choice if you need to bring your family on a taught master’s, or if permanent residency is your primary goal. We will tell you which applies before you pay a deposit.
