Canada's PR Advantage: Canada is one of the few countries where studying can directly lead to permanent residency. Graduate from a DLI (Designated Learning Institution), get a PGWP, gain work experience, and apply for PR through Express Entry or Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP).

Why Study in Canada?

Canada consistently ranks among the world's most welcoming countries for international students. Beyond excellent academics, Canada's immigration policy actively encourages international graduates to stay and contribute โ€” making it the top destination for students who want a clear path to residency.

Canada Student Visa (Study Permit) Requirements

  • Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
  • English Proficiency โ€” IELTS 6.0โ€“7.0 depending on program
  • Proof of Financial Support — CAD 22,895 for first-year living costs (single applicant, outside Quebec) plus full first-year tuition. Effective 1 September 2025.
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP) โ€” explaining study plan and intent to return
  • Medical Examination โ€” required for Pakistani nationals
  • Police Certificate (PCC) from relevant Pakistani authorities
  • Valid Passport and biometric enrollment (IRCC)
SDS has ended. The Student Direct Stream closed on 8 November 2024. There is no longer a fast-track route with a fixed GIC requirement — every applicant now uses the single regular study permit stream. Be cautious of any consultancy still advertising “SDS visa” processing.
💳
A GIC is now optional, not mandatory. Since SDS ended you may prove funds with a GIC (CAD 20,635, about Rs. 40.7 lakh), bank statements, a sponsor letter or an education loan. A GIC is still the cleanest evidence and many students continue to use one.
📄
Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). Undergraduate, graduate certificate and diploma applicants must include a PAL from the province. From 1 January 2026, master's and doctoral applicants no longer need one.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

The PGWP is an open work permit — it lets you work for almost any employer in Canada after you graduate, with no job offer needed. It is the bridge between finishing your degree and qualifying for permanent residency, because the skilled work experience you build on a PGWP is what Express Entry rewards.

RequirementDetail
InstitutionMust be a PGWP-eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
Programme lengthMinimum 8 months of full-time study
Permit lengthMatches your programme — up to 3 years for programmes of 2 years or more
Application deadlineWithin 180 days of receiving your final marks
Language testCLB 7 (degree) or CLB 5 (college/non-degree), taken within the last 2 years
Field of studyNon-degree programmes must be on IRCC’s eligible field-of-study list; degree graduates are exempt
🎓
PGWP now requires a language test. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates need CLB 7 in all four skills; college and other non-university graduates need CLB 5. Accepted tests are IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core, and results must be under 2 years old when you apply. Non-degree programmes must also appear on IRCC's eligible field-of-study list — degree graduates are exempt from that list.

The Canada PR Pathway Explained

After completing your Canadian degree, here is how the path to PR typically works:

1

Graduate from a DLI

Complete your degree from a Designated Learning Institution. Most universities and colleges in Canada qualify.

2

Apply for Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

Apply within 180 days of graduation. PGWP duration matches your program length โ€” up to 3 years for a 2-year or longer program.

3

Gain Skilled Work Experience

Work in a skilled occupation (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3). You need at least 1 year of full-time skilled work experience within 3 years.

4

Apply for PR via Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Submit an Express Entry profile. CEC draws happen regularly with competitive CRS scores for Canadian graduates. Many Pakistani students achieve PR within 6โ€“12 months of applying.

Frequently Asked Questions โ€” Canada

What is the PGWP and who qualifies?

+

The Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit allowing international graduates from eligible Canadian DLIs to work for any employer in Canada after graduation. Programs must be at least 8 months long. For programs of 2+ years, you receive a 3-year PGWP. For shorter programs, the PGWP duration equals the study duration.

Is Canada difficult to get a study visa for Pakistanis?

+

Canada student visa (Study Permit) approval rates for Pakistani applicants have varied in recent years. Strong applications require clear financial documents, a compelling SOP explaining temporary intent, and genuine academic reasons. Our team has a strong track record of preparing successful Canada study permit applications. We guide you on the exact evidence needed.

Is a college degree in Canada as good as a university degree?

+

Canadian colleges (like Seneca, Conestoga, Humber) offer 2-year diploma programs that are highly respected by employers and qualify for PGWP. They have lower tuition fees and often have higher study permit approval rates than top universities. For students targeting PR, a college pathway can be more practical and cost-effective.
