Why Pakistani Students Choose Sweden
Sweden offers something unusual: genuinely world-ranked universities, a large number of English-taught degrees, and a teaching culture built around independent thinking rather than memorisation. Learning is discussion-led and project-based, which is a real adjustment coming from a Pakistani classroom, and it is precisely why Swedish graduates are valued by employers.
The trade-off is cost, and we would rather be direct about it. Sweden is not cheap, and its funds requirement is among the strictest in Europe — you must show 13 months of living expenses in your own account before a permit is granted. Plan around that number from the start and Sweden is very achievable. Discover it in January and you have lost the year.
The Sweden Admissions Calendar
Swedish universities admit through one national portal on a fixed national timetable. These dates repeat every year, so you can plan well ahead.

Working backwards: to begin in autumn 2027 you apply between 15 October 2026 and 15 January 2027. Your IELTS or PTE, IBCC attestation and HEC transcripts all need to be finished before that window opens, not during it.
Proof of Funds — The Number That Decides Your Visa
Sweden requires you to show maintenance funds for 13 months per year of study, held as a closing balance in the student’s own bank account. This is the most common reason Pakistani applications fail.

- The money must sit in the student’s own account as a closing balance — not a parent’s account, and not a sponsor’s.
- Family maintenance is included within the main applicant’s statement, not shown separately.
- The monthly amount can be reduced if your university or an exchange organisation provides free housing or food. Otherwise assume the full figure.

Converted at 1 SEK = Rs. 28.4 (July 2026). EU and EEA citizens study free in Sweden; these fees apply to Pakistani and other non-EU students. PhD positions in Sweden are usually salaried and tuition-free, which is worth knowing if research is your goal.
Entry Requirements — Read This Carefully
Sweden applies its subject rules more strictly than most destinations, and two of them catch Pakistani applicants out repeatedly.
Bachelor’s degree entry
- Applicant must be at least 18 years old.
- FSc Pre-Medical (with Biology) or FSc Pre-Engineering (with Mathematics) is accepted.
- Intermediate in any other field is accepted only if you studied Mathematics (General).
- Business Mathematics is not accepted. This catches out a great many I.Com and commerce students — if your only maths was Business Maths, you do not currently meet the requirement.
- A DAE diploma requires equivalence from IBCC before it can be assessed.
Master’s degree entry
- A four-year Bachelor’s degree, or a 2+2 structure, is accepted.
- A B.Tech degree is not accepted for Master’s admission in Sweden. If you hold a B.Tech, speak to us before applying — a direct Master’s application will be rejected.
English language requirements

Free counselling and eligibility check
We check your subject combination against Sweden’s rules first — particularly the Mathematics requirement and the B.Tech restriction — so you do not pay fees for an application that cannot succeed.
Attestation and English test (September–December)
IBCC and HEC attestation, and your IELTS or PTE, both completed before the portal closes.
Portal application (15 October–15 January)
We build your ranked list — up to 8 undergraduate or 4 Master’s choices — and submit through the national portal.
Documents and 900 SEK fee (by early February)
All supporting documents uploaded and the application fee paid. Assessment takes roughly two to three months.
Admission notification (late March–early April)
Once admitted, you accept your place and pay the first tuition instalment.
Residence permit application
We prepare your funds evidence, the 1,000-character SOP and insurance, and submit to Migrationsverket. Apply as soon as you are admitted — processing takes time and August comes round quickly.

How much money do I need to show for a Swedish student visa?
10,656 SEK per month for 13 months — 138,528 SEK for a one-year permit, roughly Rs. 39.3 lakh. It must be a closing balance in your own account, not a parent’s or a sponsor’s. The amount rises most years, so confirm the current figure with Migrationsverket before transferring money. Many Pakistani websites still quote the 2025 figure of 10,314 SEK.
I did I.Com with Business Mathematics. Can I apply?
Not for most Bachelor’s programmes. Sweden requires Mathematics (General) at intermediate level, and Business Mathematics is not accepted as equivalent. Options include an additional qualification covering the maths requirement, or choosing a destination with different subject rules. Speak to us before paying any application fee.
I have a B.Tech degree. Can I do a Master’s in Sweden?
A B.Tech is not accepted for direct Master’s admission in Sweden. A four-year Bachelor’s degree, or a 2+2 structure, is required. This is a firm rule rather than a case-by-case judgement, so a direct application will be rejected. There may be alternative routes depending on your background, and other destinations assess B.Tech differently.
Can I apply after 15 January?
No. Sweden runs one national admissions round for the autumn intake and the deadline does not move. There is a smaller spring round at some universities, but programme choice is very limited. If you miss January, plan properly for the following October rather than rushing a weak application elsewhere.
Can I work while studying in Sweden?
Yes — there is no fixed hourly cap on a student residence permit, but you are expected to make normal progress in your studies, and universities assume roughly 40 hours a week of study. Do not build your budget around earnings: you must still evidence the full maintenance amount up front regardless of any work you plan to do.
Can I stay in Sweden after graduating?
Yes. Sweden offers a residence permit to look for work or start a business after you complete your degree. You apply from within Sweden before your student permit expires, and you must evidence maintenance funds for that period as well. Confirm the current duration and conditions with Migrationsverket, as these rules have been revised in recent years.
Are scholarships available for Pakistani students?
Yes. The Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals are highly competitive and fully funded, covering tuition, living costs and insurance, with applications typically in February. Many universities also offer partial tuition waivers of 25–75% for strong international applicants, awarded either automatically or by separate application at the time of admission.
