Why Pakistani Students Choose Malaysia
Malaysia solves three problems at once for Pakistani students, which is why it has quietly become one of our most-placed destinations.
First, many universities accept a Medium of Instruction letter instead of IELTS. Ireland, Sweden and the UK do not. If your degree was taught in English, that alone can save you Rs. 75,000 and two months.
Second, you can take a UK or Australian degree without leaving Asia. Branch campuses of Monash, Nottingham, Southampton, Reading and Heriot-Watt operate in Malaysia, and several Malaysian universities run twinned or 3+0 programmes awarding a British degree certificate at a fraction of UK cost.
Third, it is a Muslim-majority country. Halal food is the default rather than something to hunt for, prayer facilities are in every campus and mall, and Ramadan is a national rhythm rather than an inconvenience. For many Pakistani families that removes the single biggest worry about sending a child abroad.
Three Types of University — and the Cost Difference
Most guides list only private universities. Understanding all three categories is what decides your budget.

Branch Campuses — A UK Degree, Asian Cost
This is Malaysia’s strongest card and the least understood. These are not partner colleges or franchises. They are campuses of the parent university, and the degree certificate is issued by the parent institution — identical to the one awarded in Nottingham or Melbourne.

A Monash degree taken in Kuala Lumpur costs roughly a third of the same degree in Melbourne, and the certificate does not distinguish between them. If your goal is a globally recognised qualification on a Pakistani budget, this is the most efficient route available anywhere.
Studying in Malaysia Without IELTS
Many Malaysian universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from your previous institution confirming your degree was taught in English — in place of IELTS or PTE. Taylor’s, Sunway, UCSI, APU, INTI and MMU all consider MOI, and several run their own internal English placement test as an alternative.

The Student Pass Process — How Malaysia Actually Works
Malaysia does not work like other destinations. You do not apply for the visa yourself. Your university applies on your behalf through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS), and you receive a Visa Approval Letter before you travel.
Receive your offer letter
From an institution registered with EMGS. Only EMGS-recognised institutions can sponsor a Student Pass.
University applies to EMGS for your VAL
The institution submits your documents to EMGS and Malaysian Immigration. Approval produces a Visa Approval Letter (VAL), typically in 4–6 weeks.
Apply for a Single Entry Visa in Pakistan
Once the VAL is issued, Pakistani nationals apply for an SEV at the Malaysian High Commission. Your entry must match what the VAL approves.
Arrive and hand your passport to the university
On arrival the university collects your passport and submits it to the State Immigration Office, where the Student Pass sticker is affixed. Medical screening is completed here if it was not done in Pakistan.
Receive your Student Pass and iKad
The Student Pass goes into your passport and EMGS issues an iKad, your official student ID. Your legal stay is then confirmed. The pass is valid up to one year and renewed annually through your institution at RM 60.

Working While You Study — Read This Properly
This is the part most websites get wrong, and getting it wrong can cost you your visa.
- Approval must be obtained through your university’s international office, which applies to Immigration Malaysia on your behalf.
- You need a valid Student Pass, good attendance, satisfactory grades and a job offer in an approved sector.
- Permitted: restaurants, petrol stations, mini-marts and hotels.
- Not permitted: cashier roles, musician, massage therapist, factory work, or any role classed as unsafe.
Plan your finances as though you will not earn anything. Malaysia is affordable enough that this is realistic — but treating term-time work as part of your budget is how students end up in trouble with immigration.

Branch campuses in particular are generous, because they compete with their own home campuses for students.

Two full-tuition awards on that list are worth taking seriously. A 100% scholarship at Reading or Wollongong Malaysia turns a British or Australian degree into a living-costs-only proposition — roughly Rs. 10–15 lakh a year all in.

Some private universities also run rolling intakes. Whichever you target, apply four to six months ahead — the EMGS approval alone takes four to six weeks, and Pakistani applications carry additional vetting on top.
Frequently Asked Questions — Malaysia
Can I study in Malaysia without IELTS?
Yes, at many Malaysian private universities, which accept a Medium of Instruction letter or their own internal English test. Taylor’s, Sunway, UCSI, APU, INTI and MMU all consider MOI. Foreign branch campuses such as Monash and Nottingham generally still require IELTS, because they apply the parent university’s standards. Even where a university waives it, an English test strengthens your Student Pass application.
Is a Malaysian degree recognised in Pakistan?
Yes, provided the institution is registered with the Malaysian Qualifications Agency — but always confirm HEC equivalence for your specific institution and programme before enrolling. Degrees from branch campuses are awarded by the parent university, so a Monash Malaysia degree is a Monash degree. For medicine, PMDC recognition is assessed separately and is not automatic, so verify it before committing.
Can I work part-time to cover my costs?
Only during semester breaks, public holidays, or university holidays longer than seven days — and only up to 20 hours a week with prior approval from Immigration Malaysia. Working during teaching weeks is not permitted and risks cancellation of your Student Pass. Do not build your budget around earnings.
How long does the Malaysian student visa take?
The Visa Approval Letter through EMGS typically takes 4–6 weeks after your offer letter, then the Single Entry Visa is applied for in Pakistan. Because Pakistani applicants are subject to additional vetting, allow four to six months in total from application to departure.
Is Malaysia genuinely comfortable for Pakistani students?
More so than any other destination we place students in. Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country: halal food is standard rather than a search, prayer rooms are in campuses, malls and airports, and Ramadan and Eid are public occasions. There is a large South Asian community, cricket is followed, and the food is familiar. For families anxious about a first move abroad, this matters more than any ranking.
Can I transfer to the UK or Australia after starting in Malaysia?
Often yes, and it is a deliberate strategy. Several branch campuses allow students to complete part of the degree in Malaysia and transfer to the home campus for the final year, so the qualification is identical while a portion of the tuition is paid at Malaysian rates. Transfer terms vary by institution and programme, so confirm the pathway before you enrol rather than after.
Is Malaysia cheaper than Türkiye or Cyprus?
On tuition alone Türkiye is usually cheaper, with private universities from about $3,500 a year. Malaysia’s advantage is the qualification: no other affordable destination offers UK and Australian degrees awarded by the parent institution. Living costs in Penang or Johor are comparable to Turkish cities outside Istanbul. If the priority is the lowest possible cost, look at Türkiye; if it is a globally recognised degree at a manageable cost, Malaysia is stronger.
