Study in the UAE from Pakistan โ€” a British degree, three hours from Karachi

The real reason to look at Dubai is not Dubai. It is that Birmingham, Heriot-Watt, Middlesex, Curtin and Wollongong all run full campuses there, awarding the same degree as the home campus at a fraction of the cost โ€” and you can fly home for Eid.

UK and Australian degrees, awarded in Dubai

Your certificate says University of Birmingham. It does not say "Dubai".

That is the whole proposition, and most guides never spell it out. The UAE has few universities of its own that a Pakistani employer would recognise instantly. What it has instead is branch campuses โ€” full campuses operated by British and Australian universities, teaching the same programmes and awarding the parent institution's degree.

For a student who cannot fund three years in Birmingham or Perth, that changes the UAE from a fallback into a serious first choice.

One question worth asking before you commit. Not every institution in Dubai is a branch campus โ€” some are locally licensed universities with a foreign-sounding name, and some deliver a partner's degree rather than their own. Ask which body actually awards the certificate, and get the answer in writing. We check this for every application we handle.

Sharjah and Ajman are the value play nobody mentions. Both are within commuting distance of Dubai, tuition and rent are materially lower, and the degree is identical. Students who choose Ajman over Dubai routinely save more on rent across a degree than they would on any scholarship.

We quote in dirhams deliberately. The rupee rate moves enough that a converted figure printed today would mislead you within months โ€” ask us for a live PKR estimate during counselling and we will work it at that day's rate.

After you graduate โ€” the honest position

โš

The UAE does not have a post-study work visa. Several consultancy websites advertise "1 to 2 years post-study work visa" for the UAE. That is not correct. Your student visa ends when you graduate, and you have 30 days to leave the country or change your status. Anyone planning around a two-year graduate visa is planning around something that does not exist.

What actually exists is more limited, and worth understanding before you choose the UAE over Australia or Canada:

RouteWhat it gives youThe catch
Job Seeker Visa60, 90 or 120 days to find workNeeds a degree from a world top 500 university and graduation within the last 2 years. No paid work while searching
Employer-sponsored work visaResidency tied to your jobYou need the offer first. Fast once you have it โ€” often 2โ€“3 weeks
Golden Visa5 or 10 years' residencyExceptional graduates only. Typically GPA around 3.75/4.0, or a top-100 global university degree

The employer-sponsored route is the realistic one for most graduates, and it works well โ€” UAE companies sponsor visas quickly and the salary is tax-free. But it depends on landing a job, not on an automatic entitlement.

๐Ÿ›‘

There is no permanent residency or citizenship pathway. UAE residency is tied to employment or a Golden Visa, and both are renewable rather than permanent. If your goal is to settle abroad long term and eventually hold another passport, Australia, Canada or Germany are the honest answer and we will tell you so. Choose the UAE for the degree, the proximity and the tax-free salary โ€” not for settlement.

Working while you study

This is the other place students get caught. A UAE student visa does not carry automatic work rights the way an Australian Subclass 500 does. You need a separate work permit, and in practice most student employment is on-campus or an internship arranged through the university.

Plan your finances on the assumption that you will not be earning. If part-time work is central to how you intend to fund your studies, Australia gives you 48 hours a fortnight by right and is the better fit.

What you need to apply

For admission

  • Matric and Intermediate or A-Level certificates, attested
  • Academic transcripts
  • Passport copy, valid at least six months
  • Passport photographs
  • English proficiency โ€” usually IELTS 6.0โ€“6.5, sometimes MOI or an internal test
  • Bachelor's degree and transcripts for master's applicants
  • Statement of purpose for some programmes

For the student visa

  • University acceptance letter
  • Passport plus multiple copies
  • Passport photographs โ€” allow up to 12
  • Proof of funds, typically AED 50,000โ€“70,000
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Medical examination at an approved UAE centre
  • Emirates ID application once you arrive

In the UAE the university usually sponsors and processes your student visa, which is a genuine advantage over destinations where you lodge with an embassy yourself. It also means your visa is tied to your enrolment โ€” if you withdraw, the visa is cancelled.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Dubai branch campus degree the same as the UK degree?

+

Yes, at a genuine branch campus. Birmingham Dubai, Heriot-Watt Dubai, Middlesex Dubai, De Montfort Dubai and Bath Spa RAK award the same degree as the home campus, and the certificate does not state it was earned in the UAE. The same applies to Curtin Dubai, Murdoch Dubai and the University of Wollongong in Dubai. What differs is the campus, the class size and the price โ€” not the qualification.

How much does it cost to study in the UAE from Pakistan?

+

Tuition typically runs AED 37,000 to 120,000 a year depending on university and programme, with most branch campuses in the AED 50,000 to 75,000 range. Living costs in Dubai or Abu Dhabi are roughly AED 3,000 to 4,500 a month. Sharjah and Ajman are noticeably cheaper for both tuition and rent.

Does the UAE have a post-study work visa?

+

No โ€” and this is the most common misunderstanding, repeated on several consultancy websites. Your student visa ends when you graduate and you have 30 days to leave or change status. What exists instead is a Job Seeker Visa of 60, 90 or 120 days, requiring a degree from a world top 500 university and graduation within the last two years, plus a Golden Visa for exceptional graduates. The practical route for most is an employer-sponsored work visa, which a UAE company can arrange in two to three weeks once you have an offer.

Can I work while studying in the UAE?

+

Not freely. Unlike Australia or the UK, a UAE student visa does not carry automatic work rights. You need a separate work permit, and most student employment in practice is on-campus or an internship arranged through the university. Do not build your budget around part-time earnings.

How much bank balance is needed for a UAE student visa?

+

Universities typically ask for evidence in the range of AED 50,000 to 70,000 covering tuition and living costs, though the exact figure depends on the institution and programme length. You will also need a medical examination in the UAE covering HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis B and C, leprosy and syphilis for applicants over 18.

Do I need IELTS to study in the UAE?

+

Usually yes, but the bar is often lower than for the UK or Australia. Most branch campuses ask for IELTS 6.0 to 6.5. Some accept a Medium of Instruction letter or run their own English placement test, and several offer a foundation year for students who do not yet meet the requirement. Confirm with us before booking a test.

Can I get permanent residency in the UAE after studying?

+

No. The UAE has no permanent residency or citizenship pathway comparable to Australia or Canada. Residency is tied to employment or a Golden Visa, and both are renewable rather than permanent. If long-term settlement is your goal, Australia, Canada or Germany are the better choice. If you want a recognised Western degree, tax-free earnings and to stay close to family, the UAE is hard to beat.

Which UAE city is best for Pakistani students?

+

Dubai has the widest choice of branch campuses and the largest Pakistani community. Abu Dhabi has the strongest research universities. Sharjah and Ajman are the value option, with meaningfully lower tuition and rent while still within commuting distance of Dubai. For most Pakistani students it comes down to Dubai for course range, or Sharjah and Ajman for budget.

Fees and visa figures are indicative 2026โ€“27 ranges and vary by university, programme and intake. Immigration rules change โ€” we confirm the current position with the university and the relevant UAE authority before you commit money to an application.
