Canada has one of the clearest pathways from international student to permanent resident of any country in the world. Many Pakistani students have built their future in Canada using this exact pathway. This guide breaks down every step from your student visa application to receiving your Canadian PR card.

Step 1 — Choose a DLI and Get Your Study Permit

The first step is ensuring you study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) — essentially any accredited Canadian university or college. Your study permit must be valid for the full duration of your program. When applying for your study permit, the key document is your Statement of Purpose (SOP) explaining your genuine study intent and ties to Pakistan. HS Global prepares comprehensive SOP documents that have a strong track record with IRCC.

Step 2 — Graduate and Apply for PGWP

After completing your program, apply for a Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) within 180 days of receiving your final marks. The PGWP is an open work permit — valid for up to 3 years for programs of 2+ years duration. Apply through the IRCC online portal. Processing typically takes 3–5 months currently. You can continue working full-time on a maintained status (implied status) while waiting.

Step 3 — Gain Skilled Work Experience

Work in a job classified under NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 (skilled occupations). You need at least 1 year of full-time skilled work experience within the 3 years before applying for PR. IT, engineering, finance, healthcare, and business management roles all qualify. This is why choosing the right course matters — a Computer Science or Engineering degree leads directly to TEER 1 or 2 jobs.

Step 4 — Express Entry and Canadian Experience Class

Create an Express Entry profile online. With Canadian education and 1 year of Canadian work experience, you qualify for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) — a dedicated pathway for Canadian graduates. CEC draws happen regularly through the Express Entry system. Your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score determines when you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Canadian graduates typically score 400-500+ CRS points, which is competitive for CEC draws.

Step 5 — Apply for Permanent Residence

After receiving your ITA, you have 60 days to submit a complete PR application. Required documents include: all identity documents, educational credentials, work experience proof (pay stubs, employment letters, T4 tax slips), police clearances from Pakistan and Canada, and medical examinations. IRCC targets processing CEC applications within 6 months. Many Pakistani students achieve their Canadian PR within 3–5 years of first arriving in Canada as a student.
